Choosing to become a Family Day Care Educator is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. This amazing journey has forced me to grow and encouraged me to continue to learn and develop new skills every step of the way. Encouraging little people to blossom into themselves is the most rewarding part of my day, every day.
Essential service
Family Day Care Educators play a crucial role in providing safe care, education and support for infants and young children of working parents. For a working parent, there is nothing more important than knowing their child is being cared for in a safe, supportive and loving environment.
When children thrive, families thrive. When families thrive, communities thrive too.
In a Family Day Care settings, care is provided in an Educator’s own home, supported by a local Council or a Scheme as Service Provider. Service providers support Educators through professional development, home visits, access to resources and equipment and play groups.
They are assessed and regulated just like Child Care Centres with more one-on-one attention per child. Child Care Centres usually have larger groups, sorted by age with multiple carers. Individual needs can get lost in the shuffle.
Family Day Cares are focused on supporting individualised plans for small groups of infants and young children. A maximum of seven children are cared for per Educator.
I’m passionate about my career, believing it is more than just a career choice. It is a labour of love for those who truly enjoy children.
Though becoming a Family Day Care Educator is a rewarding journey, and the benefits cannot be overstated; it is not for everyone. Meeting the physical and emotional needs of little people and infants can be challenging and stressful.
However, if you genuinely enjoy children and can meet the physical demands of the role, with a little bit of work and preparation, your career could be very successful and give you the opportunity to change lives and positively impact your community for the better!
Becoming a Family Day Care Educator
Starting your own Family Day Care can come with its own set of challenges and rewards. To be successful, being an Educator, requires continuing efforts to stay abreast of childcare development.
What kind of person will be successful?
- Loves children;
- Well-organised;
- Good leader;
- Can meet emotional and physical demands.
It is a very parent friendly role, especially when your children are young. It allows you to work and earn an income, while caring for your own children simultaneously. Plus, the freedom and ability to work from home can be life changing.
Can you imagine a life without the morning rush? No beeping alarms, no rushing out the door? Or better yet, no morning commute. I can tell you; the no morning commute thrills my soul daily!
In this day and age, we all struggle with work/life balance. The competing demands of personal, family and work commitments can be devastating to our collective mental health. Working from home as a Family Day Care Provider can improve work/life balance and our mental health. Plus, you get to be your own boss.
The flexibility to set your own hours and prioritise is essential to feeling accomplished at the end of every day. And feeling accomplished when the day is done leads to a good night’s sleep, followed by the energy and enthusiasm necessary to be your best every day.
Working cooperatively with your families to design the care plan that works best, for both of you, will enhance the quality of work/life balance for both families.
